Ritik Koli paints not with his hands—but with his heart, through his feet. A young Indian artist of extraordinary grit and talent, Ritik was born without normal arms. What began as a struggle for basic mobility transformed into a radiant journey of self-discovery through art. From the narrow lanes of Delhi’s Sadar Bazar, where he grew up in modest circumstances, Ritik’s childhood was marked by isolation. Peers often excluded him. Yet, life opened a new path when he found refuge, purpose, and belonging at the Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya National Institute for Persons with Physical Disabilities. It was there, around the tender age of five, that he first began writing and painting—with his foot.

With each stroke, Ritik refused to let his disability define him. Day after day, he trained his toes to do what most hands struggle to master. From clumsy letters to intricate, soul-stirring artworks, his journey speaks of relentless perseverance. His evolution as an artist embodies the triumph of spirit over circumstance.

Ritik’s story is not merely about overcoming adversity. It is about transforming it. With resilience as his canvas and courage as his palette, he paints narratives that transcend limitations. His work is a testament to the idea that creativity knows no bounds—that beauty and brilliance can emerge from the most unlikely of places.

In an exclusive and deeply moving conversation with The Interview World at The Haat of Art, Ritik opens up about his life in colors and contours. He shares how he navigates the physical demands of his craft, the time it takes to bring each vision to life, and the meaning each piece holds. He also recounts his experiences in art exhibitions, offers heartfelt advice to children with disabilities, and outlines his bold aspirations for the next decade.

Here are the most powerful insights from Ritik Koli’s inspiring journey—one that continues to redefine possibility.

Q: Despite facing physical challenges, you’ve carved a remarkable path in the world of art. Could you share more about your journey?

A: My journey into the world of art began in the quiet corridors of my childhood. I was in fifth grade when I shaped my first clay dinosaur—small, imperfect, yet full of wonder. That moment wasn’t just play; it was a calling. Even then, I knew—I was meant to be an artist.

As I grew older, I found myself captivated by the way others painted their dreams. Their strokes sparked something deep within me—a fire I could no longer ignore. I began seeking out inspiration wherever I could find it. I enrolled in an art academy. I wandered through exhibitions, studying each canvas like a story waiting to be told.

And then, I began to paint.

Each brushstroke became a step forward. With time, my hands grew more confident, my vision more defined. What started as silent practice blossomed into expressive creation. My work began to speak—and people listened.

Slowly, appreciation poured in. Audiences connected with my art. Recognition followed. And with every compliment, every moment of awe from a viewer, I felt a deeper affirmation: this is my path, my passion, my purpose.

Q: Could you walk us through your painting process? How do you approach creating a piece, and how much time does it typically take to complete one?

A: I paint with my feet—every stroke a quiet rebellion against limitation. I hold the brush between my toes, guiding it with patience, precision, and purpose. Each piece you see here took nearly two full days to complete. Every line, every layer, carries the weight of time, effort, and an unshaken will to create beauty beyond constraint.

Q: What do you aim to create with your art?

A: I find my peace in painting. With every stroke, the noise of the world fades, and I slip into a space where only colors speak. But I don’t just want to create art—I want to become a great artist.

I hunger to grow. To practice more. To sharpen my skill until it sings. I want to step onto bigger stages, to compete, to challenge myself in new arenas. I dream of showcasing my work in exhibitions across the country—and beyond.

More than anything, I want the world to know my name. I want people to see my art and say, “That’s Ritik Koli.”

Q: How many exhibitions have you participated in so far, and could you highlight a few that were especially memorable or meaningful to you?

A: I’ve showcased my work in 26 exhibitions across Delhi, Mumbai, and Hyderabad—each one a step forward in my artistic journey. Though I haven’t yet exhibited internationally, I had the honour of participating in the prestigious All India Art Gallery, where my work earned the first position.

It was a defining moment. Within just two days, I was selected—a recognition that affirmed years of quiet perseverance. I also took part in an online exhibition and once again secured the top spot.

From the Mumbai exhibition, I received more than just applause. I brought home a medal. A trophy. And above all, a renewed belief that my art has the power to reach hearts—and rise beyond expectations.

Q: In India, many children face physical challenges similar to yours. What message or encouragement would you like to share with them?

A: Too often, they lose hope. They begin to believe they’re incapable, that the world has no place for them. And in that despair, some take the wrong path—begging to survive, rather than living with purpose.

Because of this, society misunderstands us. It judges all by the actions of a few. But the truth is—they are simply lost, not incapable.

They must realize their potential. They can do something. In fact, they can do a great deal. They only need to believe it. They must shift their mindset, choose a positive path, and take that first step toward purpose.

I truly believe that with even a spark of interest, they can excel—no matter the field. All it takes is faith, effort, and the courage to try.

Q: Looking ahead, where do you envision yourself in the next 10 years as an artist?

A: My eyes are set on the international stage. I dream of showcasing my art in Dubai—of standing among the world’s finest. I’m not just thinking about it. I’m preparing for it with purpose and passion.

I want to represent my journey beyond borders. I want to win a medal—not just for myself, but for everyone who dares to believe that limitations can be turned into legacy.
