In an exclusive discourse with The Interview World, Prof. (Dr.) Jyoti Rana, Registrar of Shri Vishwakarma Skill University, illuminates the plethora of educational opportunities and specializations proffered by the institution. She underscores the university’s initiatives to enhance women-centric courses and bolster their employability through industry collaborations. Herein, we present the salient insights from her interview.
Q: Can you highlight the main educational opportunities and specializations at Shri Vishwakarma Skill University?
A: At our university, we proffer an extensive gamut of academic programs, ranging from certificate courses to doctoral degrees, each meticulously designed in synergy with industry partners. The collaboration with industry is an imperative prerequisite for the inception of any program. Accordingly, every program is fortified by at least one industry partner, with several programs benefiting from the patronage of a consortium of partners. Our curriculum encompasses 44 disciplines, with a notable emphasis on women’s education, as evidenced by the 14 to 15 subjects specifically tailored to empower and uplift women.
Q: Given your earlier mention of a lower focus on women-centric courses, what initiatives is your university implementing to address this gap?
A: Our university is proactively spearheading several groundbreaking initiatives in the domain of recognition of prior learning (RPL). We extend invitations to candidates devoid of formal degrees yet possessing substantial experiential knowledge, meticulously mapping their professional experience to academic qualifications. Through comprehensive bridge courses, we facilitate their attainment of degrees upon fulfillment of eligibility criteria and successful completion of requisite examinations.
Moreover, we have instituted exceptional schemes and reserved quotas for female students, designed to significantly bolster their admissions and participation across a myriad of programs. We actively solicit industry sponsorships for women candidates, and several forward-thinking industries have manifested interest in inaugurating women-exclusive cohorts within our university. This initiative empowers women to venture into traditionally male-dominated fields such as construction and welding.
A stellar example of our success is a female student who triumphed in a welding competition and was subsequently recruited by Hero MotoCorp. Our resolute objective is to elevate our female students, enabling them to excel in arenas historically resistant to female participation, such as welding and construction.
Q: What kind of response are you receiving regarding your efforts to make economically disadvantaged groups more financially inclusive and economically stable?
A: We are inundated with an overwhelming response, as our students often find themselves stifled during their on-the-job training. They spend six months with us and another six immersed in industry experience, yet they encounter formidable challenges during this period.
Nevertheless, our students are achieving self-reliance, funding their education, and supporting their families. As a result, there is a burgeoning interest among students to enroll in our university.
Q: Do you have an estimate of how many students have received their degrees or diplomas to date?
A: Presently, our esteemed institution boasts an enrolment of 2000 students, of whom around 600-700 have successfully attained their degrees and diplomas. Remarkably, an impressive 81% of our graduates secure coveted placements, a testament to the rigorous industry-oriented training that equips them for seamless integration into the workforce upon culmination of their studies.
