The National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT), an autonomous scientific society under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India, carries a clear and consequential mandate: to build a future-ready digital workforce for the nation. To fulfil this responsibility, NIELIT leverages its extensive nationwide network of centres and accredited partners to deliver industry-aligned education, training, and certification across emerging and high-impact technologies.

Over the past few years, NIELIT has elevated Artificial Intelligence to a strategic national priority. Accordingly, it has established India AI Labs—state-of-the-art, AI-enabled learning ecosystems—and launched NSQF-aligned programs such as the AI Development Associate, designed explicitly to enhance employability and job readiness. In parallel, under the India AI Mission, NIELIT has rolled out structured, end-to-end training pathways in data science, Python programming, data curation and annotation, and applied AI. These initiatives collectively serve students, working professionals, and government stakeholders across the country.

To further democratize access to AI education, NIELIT has operationalized its Virtual Academy, enabling scalable online and blended learning models without compromising academic rigor. At the same time, through sustained collaboration with industry, academia, and state governments, NIELIT continues to establish Centres of Excellence and systematically strengthen national capacity in artificial intelligence. Together, these efforts reinforce India’s broader digital transformation agenda.

In an exclusive interaction with The Interview World at the 6th Edition of the FICCI AI India Conclave 2025, Dr. Madan Mohan Tripathi, Director General of NIELIT, offers a comprehensive view of these initiatives. He outlines the organization’s approach to advancing AI education and skilling, explains how NIELIT is enabling students to create and commercialize AI-driven intellectual property, details its commitment to building a sustainable, human-centric AI workforce, and articulates his vision for India’s AI ecosystem over the next decade. The following are the key takeaways from this insightful conversation.

Q: What major programs and initiatives has NIELIT implemented to promote AI education and build a skilled AI workforce nationwide?

A: The National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT), under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India, has undertaken a series of decisive initiatives to scale and democratize AI training across the country. As a foundational step, NIELIT has established 28 India AI Labs nationwide, spanning from Kashmir to Chennai, Patna to Ajmer, and extending deep into the Northeast. These labs function as regional hubs for AI skilling, where students do not merely learn concepts but actively apply them. By working on real-world and locally relevant use cases, learners develop AI solutions that address contextual challenges and deliver tangible impact.

Beyond physical infrastructure, NIELIT has built a comprehensive and forward-looking AI digital platform to further expand access. The platform provides students with dedicated computing resources alongside a robust catalogue of more than 100 courses. Each course aligns with the National Skill Qualification Framework, carries strong industry endorsement, and reflects curricula co-created with industry leaders. Importantly, NIELIT has invited industry partners to contribute real problem statements to the platform. Students engage with these challenges through hands-on projects, ensuring practical exposure and job-ready competencies.

To enhance learning outcomes, the platform integrates an AI-driven recommender system, personalized learning pathways, and a multilingual chatbot. Together, these features support learners throughout their journey while delivering real-time feedback to both students and faculty. Through this integrated physical and digital ecosystem, NIELIT is systematically bridging regional disparities and extending high-quality AI education to every corner of the country.

Q: What mechanisms has your organization put in place to help students create and commercialize AI-related intellectual property?

A: To institutionalize and accelerate intellectual property creation, we have adopted a clear and enabling policy. Under this framework, NIELIT provides 100 percent funding for intellectual property protection for any student, faculty member, staff, or associate of the organization. As a result, the cost of filing and protecting IP never becomes a burden on students or innovators.

Consequently, we actively encourage learners to secure patents and protect their designs before proceeding to publication or broader dissemination. This policy shifts the mindset from mere academic output to value creation and commercialization readiness. Importantly, its impact is already evident. A growing number of students are now safeguarding their intellectual property at an early stage, well before advancing to subsequent phases of development or disclosure.

Q: How does your organization balance AI adoption with workforce sustainability, particularly in mitigating job displacement through human-in-the-loop models?

A: NIELIT operates first and foremost as a national skilling organization. While broader industry dynamics and workforce disruptions may lie beyond our direct control, our responsibility is clear. We focus on equipping individuals with the right skills to enter the job market, remain employable, and continuously adapt to its evolving demands.

Accordingly, we design and deliver programs across the full skilling spectrum. These include upskilling initiatives for working professionals, reskilling pathways for those transitioning roles, and foundational programs for new entrants to the workforce. Through this integrated approach, we ensure that learners stay relevant, competitive, and prepared for the opportunities and challenges of a rapidly changing employment landscape.

Q: What is your vision for India’s AI ecosystem over the next decade?

A: Looking ahead to the next decade, our vision is both ambitious and unequivocal. We aim to see at least one hundred globally significant solutions originating from India not merely competing, but defining and leading markets worldwide.
