Q: Could you elaborate on RMSI’s areas of expertise and operations related to climate change and climate resilience, and how the organisation is contributing to this space?
A: RMSI specialises in risk modelling, with a strong focus on climate-change risk. While organisations such as the IPCC develop sophisticated regional climate models, the real challenge is translating those models into actionable insights at the community, individual, and enterprise levels.
To achieve this, RMSI downscales climate models to much higher resolutions and integrates them with sector-specific impact models. This approach enables organisations to understand how climate change could affect their assets, operations, supply chains, and business performance. RMSI then quantifies these risks, helping clients design targeted adaptation and mitigation strategies.

Q: How can disruptive technologies such as AI and digital twins help enterprises, states, and nations address climate-change challenges, and what role can RMSI play in accelerating their adoption for greater climate resilience?
A: Climate change is fundamentally about understanding and managing future risk. Much of our understanding comes from projections generated by mathematical climate models that estimate how the climate could evolve over the next 30, 50, or even 100 years. However, projections alone are not enough. To understand their real-world implications, we also need accurate digital representations of the world as it exists today.
This is where digital twin technology becomes critical. By creating a digital twin of an asset, infrastructure network, or supply chain, we can overlay climate projections and hazard models onto a precise representation of current conditions. This enables organizations to quantify potential impacts, identify vulnerabilities, assess exposure, and determine where and how to intervene. In turn, it transforms climate risk from a theoretical projection into an actionable business problem.
AI is the second major disruptive technology reshaping climate-risk management. Climate change affects entire societies, economies, and interconnected sectors, generating enormous volumes of complex data. Traditional approaches cannot process this data at the scale, speed, or resolution required. AI can. It can analyse vast datasets, identify patterns, generate insights, and support decisions with a level of granularity that conventional methods cannot achieve.
The third, and perhaps most important, frontier is the convergence of these technologies. Digital twins, AI, and geospatial intelligence each provide significant value, but none can deliver a complete solution independently. The real transformation comes from integrating them into a unified technology ecosystem. This is where RMSI excels: combining these capabilities to translate complex climate data into precise, scalable, and actionable intelligence for managing climate risk.
Q: How do you envision India’s journey toward climate resilience, and how important is the government’s growing focus on climate action in shaping the country’s long-term development and sustainability?
A: India faces a defining challenge. We are among the world’s fastest-growing economies, yet we remain highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. However, this vulnerability also presents a significant opportunity. If we act decisively, and if the government continues to make climate resilience a national priority, we can embed resilience across every dimension of society and strengthen our capacity to withstand future shocks. In doing so, India could build a more sustainable and resilient growth model than many other economies. Importantly, the government is already playing a constructive role in advancing this agenda. At the same time, industry is increasingly coming together to accelerate collective action through initiatives such as those led with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).
Q: What data, metrics, and analytical capabilities do you leverage so that India can accelerate its ESG performance and position itself as a global leader, particularly in comparison with developed economies?
A: For India, RMSI has assembled comprehensive hazard datasets at resolutions ranging from 30 metres to five kilometres. This level of granularity enables organisations to assess critical climate and natural hazards—including floods, earthquakes, windstorms, heat stress and water stress—with unprecedented precision. The datasets cover historical events, hazard modelling and climate-change projections spanning the next 50 to 80 years.
We have integrated this extensive intelligence into ClimaQ, a distinctive platform that provides location-specific climate-risk insights across the entire country. Users can enter any location and assess projected climate impacts for 2030, 2050 and 2080. Moreover, the platform provides a 72-hour alert service for extreme rainfall and can identify areas facing potential flood risk.
This demonstrates that India already possesses the data, technology and analytical capabilities needed to manage climate risk at scale. Industry can now leverage these capabilities not only to assess its own assets and portfolios but also to map vulnerabilities across its entire supply chain. This is particularly important because climate disruption rarely stops at the boundaries of a large enterprise; it can quickly affect smaller suppliers and partners. By extending climate-risk intelligence across the value chain, businesses can strengthen resilience, anticipate disruption and protect continuity. Ultimately, platforms such as ClimaQ can help organisations move from reacting to climate risks to proactively managing them.
Q: How will your organisation help India’s farmers and agriculture sector adapt to climate change, build resilience, and sustain livelihoods amid increasing environmental risks?
A: Recognising the strategic importance of agriculture, we created another company, RMSI Cropalytics, dedicated entirely to mapping India’s agricultural landscape. Its core innovation is what we call the “Life Crop Map of India,” a dynamic, data-driven view of the country’s agriculture. It provides a near-real-time picture of crop acreage, crop health and expected yields. However, the platform goes well beyond monitoring current conditions. We are extending it to incorporate climate projections and assess how climate-induced stresses could affect crops across regions. This will create significant value for multiple stakeholders.
First, it can provide farmers with actionable intelligence on emerging climate risks and help them identify practical adaptation measures. Second, it can equip industry players, commodity companies and supply-chain participants with critical data to model agricultural risks, anticipate disruptions and strengthen resilience. Ultimately, the objective is to build a comprehensive intelligence layer that connects climate, crops and supply chains, enabling better decisions across India’s agricultural ecosystem.
Q: How is your organisation working with the Government of India and state governments to enable them to effectively leverage your data for better policymaking and public services?
A: We work closely with select state governments and actively support national programmes. Through these partnerships, we help government agencies build stronger digital platforms, improve data quality, and strengthen decision-making capabilities. Moreover, this remains an ongoing effort, as we continue collaborating with government agencies to deliver better, data-driven public solutions.
Q: Given the recent disaster in Nepal, what programs or partnerships do you have with national or state disaster management authorities to strengthen preparedness and response?
A: Yes, we work closely with several states to implement advanced flood-monitoring programs. We believe these efforts must combine two capabilities: robust flood forecasting and highly responsive, near-real-time monitoring. Forecasting remains essential, but complex events can be difficult to model accurately, particularly in regions such as Nepal, where multiple factors can converge. Climate stress, earthquakes, glacial instability, and the gradual accumulation and sudden release of water can interact in unpredictable ways, generating enormous downstream flows.
In such scenarios, high-performance flood-monitoring systems become critical. They can detect rapidly developing threats and provide at least 30 minutes, and potentially longer, of lead time before a disaster strikes. That window can make an enormous difference. It gives authorities time to issue warnings, mobilize emergency resources, evacuate vulnerable communities, and ultimately save lives.
Therefore, near-real-time flood monitoring should become a standard component of disaster-management infrastructure across regions exposed to severe flooding. The objective is not merely to predict floods, but to detect them early enough to enable decisive action when every minute matters.
Q: Given your global experience with institutions like the World Bank, which countries and enterprises are leading in this space compared to others?
A: RMSI brings one of the strongest South-South cooperation models in the industry. We have worked across nearly 40 countries in the Global South, giving us a depth of experience and reach that very few Indian companies can match. Our work spans countries across Africa and the Pacific, including many low-income nations that form a significant part of the Global South.
