Membrane Hitec, headquartered in Chennai, engineers advanced ultrafiltration (UF) membrane solutions for water and wastewater treatment. It broke new ground as India’s first manufacturer of capillary-type UF membranes and has since built more than two decades of deep technical expertise in membrane engineering.
Driven by rigorous research and continuous innovation, the company designs high-performance membrane systems for a wide spectrum of industrial and environmental applications. As a core entity within the TEAM Hitec group under Dr. Rao Holdings, Membrane Hitec integrates indigenous manufacturing strengths with global scientific collaboration. Consequently, its solutions operate at scale across India and reach international markets, advancing sustainable water management, recycling, and zero-liquid-discharge initiatives.
In an exclusive interaction with The Interview World at IFAT Delhi 2026, E. Muniyappan, Senior Manager – Projects & Proposals at Membrane Hitec, articulates the company’s ultrafiltration portfolio and delineates its distinctive technical advantages. He further outlines the firm’s innovation roadmap and details the certifications that underpin its quality assurance framework. What follows are the key insights distilled from this high-value exchange.
Q: Could you elaborate on the ultrafiltration solutions offered by Membrane Hitec and the specific industry challenges they are designed to address?
A: Membrane Hitec, a division of the TEAM Hitec Group, manufactures ultrafiltration (UF) membranes in India and has built a strong operational legacy over the past 25 years. It leverages advanced technology originating from Singapore; however, it engineers and produces its membranes entirely within India, making it the country’s first fully indigenous UF membrane manufacturer.
The company develops high-performance membranes using Polyethersulfone (PES) and Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). It offers both in-to-out and out-in configurations, thereby addressing diverse operational requirements. Over the past two and a half decades, it has consistently supplied these systems to government bodies and private enterprises, while steadily expanding its industrial footprint.
Moreover, Membrane Hitec serves a wide spectrum of sectors, including oil and gas, power, paper, infrastructure, municipal utilities, and petrochemicals. It supports critical water treatment applications across the value chain. Specifically, it delivers solutions for water treatment plants (WTP), raw water treatment, and effluent treatment plants (ETP). In addition, it handles complex effluent streams such as cooling tower blowdown, process discharge, and textile wastewater.
Furthermore, the company addresses sewage treatment requirements through advanced sewage treatment plants (STP) and recycling systems. As a result, it enables industries and municipalities to enhance water reuse, improve operational efficiency, and meet stringent environmental compliance standards.
Q: How do your products differentiate from those of your competitors?
A: Membrane Hitec manufactures its products entirely in India; therefore, it ensures complete control over quality and supply reliability. At the same time, it maintains highly competitive pricing, which strengthens its value proposition across markets.
Moreover, the company backs its products with robust service support. It delivers comprehensive after-sales capabilities, including installation, commissioning, and rapid troubleshooting through a dedicated technical team. In addition, it draws on nearly three decades of hands-on industry experience, which enables it to execute projects with precision and consistency.
Q: What new products or innovations are you planning to develop over the next five years?
A: Membrane Hitec is sharpening its future roadmap with a clear focus on next-generation product development. It is actively expanding into new application domains; accordingly, it is advancing the development of ceramic membranes and air filtration membranes to address emerging industrial and environmental demands.
At the same time, the company is accelerating its push toward advanced membrane technologies. It already offers membrane bioreactor (MBR) solutions; however, it now plans to scale these systems significantly to meet large-volume deployment requirements. Consequently, this strategic direction positions Membrane Hitec to broaden its technology portfolio while strengthening its capability to deliver high-performance, scalable filtration solutions.
Q: Do your products hold any recognized quality certifications?
A: Membrane Hitec has already secured key microbiological validation and log reduction certifications from Anna University and UCT. These credentials substantiate the performance and reliability of its membrane technologies.
Building on this foundation, the company is actively pursuing additional accreditations. In particular, it is targeting certification from NSF, along with other national and international standards. Consequently, this ongoing certification strategy reinforces its commitment to quality assurance, regulatory compliance, and global market readiness.
