These molecular tools not only accelerate diagnosis but also empower veterinarians to implement proactive disease management and prevention strategies. The result—improved health outcomes for both pets and livestock.
Beyond molecular veterinary diagnostics, the laboratory offers an expansive portfolio of services, including pathology, immunodiagnostics, genetic testing, microbiology, and biochemistry. By delivering precision-driven insights, VetDiag equips veterinary professionals with the knowledge to make data-backed clinical decisions, ultimately elevating standards of care across the board.
With innovation at its core and excellence as its compass, VetDiag Genomix plays a pivotal role in advancing veterinary medicine. Its contributions extend beyond individual animal care to encompass public health—particularly through its role in detecting and controlling zoonotic diseases.
In an exclusive dialogue with The Interview World at Startup Mahakumbh, Dr. G. Mohana Sheela, Founder and Managing Director of VetDiag Genomix, sheds light on her company’s pioneering veterinary diagnostics. She delves into the diverse animal categories served, outlines the company’s robust infrastructure and extensive network of veterinary professionals, and unveils her vision for future expansion.
Here are the most compelling insights from her conversation—each a testament to VetDiag’s mission to transform veterinary diagnostics in India and beyond.
Q: Can you share insights into the veterinary diagnostic solutions your startup provides, and how they address existing gaps in animal healthcare?
A: The inspiration behind our startup stems from a deeply personal experience. As a devoted pet lover, I witnessed a painful gap in the healthcare ecosystem—while every state boasts numerous diagnostic labs for humans, veterinary diagnostics remain largely neglected. Tragically, I lost two to three of my own pets due to the lack of proper diagnostic facilities. Their untimely deaths were not only heartbreaking but also revealing.
That void sparked a mission. I realized the urgent need for reliable, accessible veterinary diagnostics. This motivation led to the birth of our startup.
Today, we provide comprehensive diagnostic services for animals across various species. Just as humans undergo tests like Complete Blood Picture (CBP), Liver Function Test (LFT), and Kidney Function Test (KFT), we offer similar high-quality diagnostics tailored for animals—such as kidney profiles, blood analysis, and liver assessments.
Our goal is clear: to ensure no pet suffers or dies due to avoidable diagnostic failures. We’re here to bridge the gap and elevate the standard of animal healthcare.
Q: Which animal species are currently covered under your diagnostic services, and are there plans to expand this scope?
A: We currently offer diagnostic services for a wide range of animals, including cattle, dogs, cats, and even birds. Additionally, we provide specialized sex determination services for breeders—this includes accurate gender identification in species such as parrots.
Q: Could you describe the network and infrastructure your startup has established to support the delivery and scalability of your veterinary diagnostic services?
A: We have launched our operations through dedicated service centers in Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, and Hyderabad. To extend our reach further, we’ve partnered with Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), leveraging their vast presence across India—over 791 centers nationwide.
Our mission extends beyond urban hubs. We are actively working to deliver diagnostic services in rural areas, where such facilities are scarce or nonexistent. In these regions, livestock holds immense value for farmers—not just economically, but emotionally and psychologically. Cattle are integral to their livelihood, and protecting them is critical.
However, animals cannot articulate their pain. Take an ox, for instance—no one can know what’s happening inside its body without proper investigation. That’s why accurate diagnostic reports are essential. Only with the right tests can veterinarians make informed, timely decisions that save lives and support the well-being of both animals and their caretakers.
Q: How large is the veterinary diagnostics market currently, and what growth potential do you see in this sector?
A: This is an incredibly high-potential and underserved sector. At present, there are virtually no dedicated competitors in India offering exclusive diagnostic services for animals. That gives us a first-mover advantage in a rapidly expanding market.
The numbers speak for themselves. With each passing year, the animal population continues to rise—across both livestock and companion animals. India’s agricultural sector is thriving, and states like Gujarat are leading in milk production. Simultaneously, the number of cattle nationwide is steadily increasing.
Moreover, the landscape of pet ownership is evolving. Pet parenthood has seen a significant surge, driven by changing lifestyles and emotional connections with animals. As demand for pets grows, so does the need for reliable veterinary diagnostics.
In short, the market is poised for exponential growth. We are strategically positioned to lead this transformation and shape the future of animal healthcare in India.
Q: How many veterinary professionals are currently associated with your platform, and what roles do they play in service delivery?
A: Currently, we have established partnerships with over 300 veterinary doctors across Andhra Pradesh. We are systematically mapping each region and rebuilding veterinary support networks, one community at a time. Through strategic outreach programs, we engage these veterinarians to bridge the critical gap between diagnosis and treatment. By ensuring precise and early diagnosis, we empower veterinarians to deliver accurate, timely interventions—ultimately increasing the chances of saving animal lives.
Q: What are your key future plans for growth and innovation in the veterinary diagnostics space?
A: My vision for the future is to transform Vetdiag Genomix into a comprehensive, pan-India solution for animal healthcare. We are already engaged in manufacturing diagnostic kits, while also importing rapid test kits from abroad. However, my goal is to localize this capability by developing rapid test kits domestically under the Make in India initiative. The underlying technology for these kits remains the same—whether for humans or animals.
What we need is decisive initiative and focused execution. India possesses robust biotechnology capabilities; we must now channel this expertise into the field of animal biotechnology. By doing so, we can develop rapid test kits for a wide range of diseases, offering a vital preventive tool to protect and save animal lives.
