Together, these strengths translate into measurable value and long-term partnerships.

In an exclusive conversation with The Interview World at Paperex 2025, Jagdish Gupta, General Manager – Sales, Suzalkem Technologies Pvt. Ltd., highlights the company’s core offerings for the paper industry. He also explains how Suzalkem embeds sustainability into its processes and solutions, details the role of nanobiotechnology in odour-control innovations, and shares his vision for the next five to ten years, from new solution portfolios to ambitious market expansion.

The following are the key insights from this compelling discussion.

Q: Could you outline Suzalkem’s key offerings for the paper industry and explain how they differ from comparable solutions in the market?

A: We operate a dedicated manufacturing facility in Hyderabad that produces specialty chemicals for both paper processing and water and wastewater treatment. Alongside this, we maintain a robust in-house R&D setup. Every product we introduce to the paper industry is backed by rigorous research, extensive case studies, and thorough performance validation. Our team moves forward only when we are confident that a formulation will genuinely enhance paper production, whether by improving key process parameters or driving meaningful cost efficiencies.

Because of this disciplined approach, we have built a strong and credible product portfolio. Today, our customer base spans across India, including South Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Punjab. Most of the leading paper mills in the country count on our solutions and rely on our support.

This is the ethos that guides our work: scientific rigor, validated performance, and a commitment to delivering real value to every mill we serve.

Q: How does your organization embed sustainability into its processes and solutions in response to today’s increasingly sustainability-driven business landscape?

A: Sustainability has become a defining challenge for the industry, and market dynamics are shifting at unprecedented speed. As plastic use declines, paper increasingly steps in to replace it, especially in packaging, where demand is growing rapidly.

With so many new applications emerging, every product requirement opens a fresh opportunity for innovation. When the market signals a need, our team immediately studies the underlying chemistry and identifies where we can add meaningful value. We then develop the product and the process expertise required to meet that need with precision.

At the same time, sustainability pressures continue to reshape the paper sector. Over the past two years, the industry has faced significant volatility. Routine kraft paper grades, for instance, are caught in continuous price wars. When waste paper costs rise, margins shrink, putting additional strain on profitability.

Despite these challenges, the market evolves month by month. Leading paper manufacturers now closely track emerging demands and pivot quickly toward products with better prospects. As their partners, we take on these challenges with them. We work to strengthen their new product lines, enhance their process efficiencies, and help them respond to fast-changing market expectations.

Through this approach, we continue to deepen our market presence and deliver strong, value-driven support to our customers.

Q: As you employ nanobiotechnology for odour control, could you elaborate on how this technology works?

A: Paper has become essential across industries—from food and apparel packaging to countless manufacturing applications. However, as its use expands, odour control has emerged as a critical issue. Growing water scarcity and rising pollution levels have pushed industries toward Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD), and the paper sector is no exception. Because ZLD demands extensive water recycling, odour problems naturally intensify.

Paper manufacturing is fundamentally a liquid–solid separation process, and it requires substantial water. Typically, producing one ton of paper consumes five to six tons of water. In today’s environmental and regulatory climate, industries can no longer rely on fresh water and discharge the effluent. Both government mandates and industry commitments now align firmly with achieving ZLD.

As mills move toward higher recycling rates, biological activity in the system increases, and with it, foul odour. This is what consumers often experience when they receive a parcel from Amazon or Flipkart and notice a strong, unpleasant smell from the packaging.

To address this challenge, we offer a nanotechnology-based biocide designed specifically to control and eliminate odour arising from recycled-process water. Its performance is measurable, consistent, and highly effective.

Moreover, developed markets already enforce strict specifications for odour-free packaging, and many domestic MNCs follow similar norms, especially in food and apparel segments. Our biocide helps mills meet these standards by suppressing odour and ensuring a fresh, clean smell, making it ideally suited for food packaging, apparel packaging, and other sensitive applications.

Q: How do you envision Suzalkem evolving over the next 5 to 10 years in terms of new solution offerings and market expansion?

A: As I mentioned, our work extends far beyond the paper sector. We also serve industries such as sugar, distillery, and power—because wherever water and wastewater exist, our expertise becomes essential.

Looking ahead to the next five to ten years, we aim to significantly expand our product range. Our vision is to become a true solution-finder, a pathfinder, rather than simply another supplier of routine chemicals. Commodity chemicals face intense competition and limited differentiation, making it imperative for us to innovate and introduce technologies the market genuinely needs.

To stay ahead, our marketing and R&D teams continuously track market trends, emerging challenges, and evolving customer requirements. In parallel, our technical team builds the scientific and operational backbone needed to convert these insights into high-performance, market-ready solutions.

As the market continues to change, we are preparing to change with it, developing new technologies, strengthening our capabilities, and positioning ourselves to deliver even greater value to the paper industry and beyond in the years ahead.
