RT Vision Technologies Pvt. Ltd., founded in 2003, is a leading Indian manufacturer and supplier of signal and telecommunication equipment for Indian Railways, metro systems, and rapid transit networks. The company provides a comprehensive range of products, including cutting-edge signal systems, rolling stock components, and advanced wayside equipment, such as automatic wheel profile measurement and coach condition monitoring systems.

Renowned for its robust R&D capabilities, RT Vision excels in innovation and quality, utilizing state-of-the-art manufacturing technologies. Among its landmark projects is the indigenization of Platform Screen Doors (PSD) as part of the ‘Make in India’ initiative, with successful installations at Yashobhoomi Metro Station. Trusted by major clients like DMRC, Adani, BHEL, and L&T, RT Vision has firmly established itself as a key player in strengthening India’s rail infrastructure.

In an exclusive interaction with The Interview World, Rohan Garg, Head of Marketing at RT Vision Technologies Pvt. Ltd., offers valuable insights into the company’s innovations in railway signal systems. He also discusses the rationale behind replacing yellow light with purple, highlights the safety products enhancing railway safety, and underscores their global competitiveness. Additionally, Garg provides an in-depth look at the fire alarm system and other groundbreaking innovations. Here are the key takeaways from his enlightening conversation.

Q: Can you shed light on the key innovations you have introduced in railway signal systems?

A: The products on display represent our latest innovations introduced in India. These include a variety of signals that we manufacture locally. Our systems are SIL-4 compliant, meeting the highest safety integrity standards for reliability. We supply these advanced solutions across multiple railway and metro applications. These smart signals are the next generation of signal technology, designed to enhance the efficiency and safety of Indian railways and metros. Notably, we have also replaced the traditional yellow light with purple, marking a significant upgrade in signal technology.

Q: What is the rationale behind replacing the yellow light with purple in the signal system, and what benefits does this change bring?

A: The purple color offers superior visibility, making signal identification easier. Its higher wavelength enables it to travel over greater distances, enhancing the reliability of the signal. Moreover, this innovation is one of the key advancements we’ve introduced. Another significant innovation is the automated wayside wheel profile measurement system.

This fully automated, unmanned system is installed on the track. As the rolling stock approaches, high-speed cameras and lasers project beams from multiple angles onto the wheel. These beams triangulate the exact geometry, enabling us to measure the wheel’s contour and section precisely. This system provides critical parameters such as root radius and tread hollow, which are essential for maintaining the correct wheel specifications and ensuring the safety of the rolling stock. If any parameter reaches a critical threshold, an alert is triggered for authorized personnel, allowing timely intervention and preventing potential accidents.

Renowned universities have recommended installing such systems every 30 to 50 kilometers to significantly enhance safety. This laser-based system is specifically designed for installation on the main line. Experts suggest that after each scan, the next scan should ideally occur within 50 kilometers. This ensures that any pending condemnation alerts are promptly generated and sent for timely action.

Q: What other innovations have you introduced for the railway sector, and how do they enhance operations or address key challenges?

A: This system is a remarkable advancement, especially when compared to current wheel profile measurement methods, which rely on manual techniques. Traditionally, a caliper is used to measure the wheel profile, requiring the rolling stock to be stationary in a yard or maintenance depot. In contrast, the key unique selling point (USP) of our system is its ability to measure various wheel parameters with high accuracy, even while the rolling stock is in motion. As the rolling stock moves, the system captures all relevant parameters and wirelessly transmits the results, including alerts, to the control room in real time.

Q: How do your products enhance railway safety measures, and how do they compare in competitiveness with similar global solutions?

A: All the products displayed here represent a significant step toward enhancing railway safety. Moreover, they align with the broader vision of Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat. Every product you see is entirely manufactured in India at our facility in Greater Noida. These innovations are designed to improve safety, reliability, and operational efficiency, directly benefiting the operations and profitability of Indian Railways and metros alike.

Among the offerings, we have two key products: the full-height and half-height platform screen doors. These screens are installed on platforms to enhance passenger safety. With the rise in suicide attempts on tracks, as you may have heard, platform screen doors are becoming increasingly necessary. Additionally, with some metros still using DC tracks, controlling access to the platform is crucial to avoid accidents. These products are a vital solution in making railway travel safer and more secure for everyone.

Q: Will these full-screen doors be installed exclusively on regular railways, or are there plans to implement them in metro systems as well?

A: These platform screen doors are already in use across various railway networks. Half-height platform screen doors are installed at locations where train speeds are lower, while full-height platform screen doors are deployed on high-speed tracks, such as those used for rapid rail transport or airport express lines, where speeds are significantly higher. The full-height doors also help regulate air conditioning and other environmental factors on the platform.

As for further innovations, we have developed an emergency talkback system. This system allows passengers to communicate directly with the train driver or loco pilot in case of an emergency or when urgent communication is needed. By pressing and holding the push button for three seconds, the passenger initiates a call to the driver, enabling real-time communication in critical situations. Additionally, we offer a comprehensive CCTV solution for onboard monitoring, tailored for metro and rail applications.

Q: Can you provide detailed insights into your fire alarm system, including its features, functionality, and advantages?

A: The product you see here is an advanced addressable fire alarm system. Traditional fire alarm systems present a significant issue: they are not addressable. In these systems, when a fire is detected, the entire building enters lockdown, triggering the suppression system throughout the entire structure. This can lead to unnecessary disruptions.

Our addressable fire alarm system solves this problem. It precisely identifies the location of the fire, allowing the suppression system to be activated only in the affected area, minimizing damage and ensuring targeted response. Unlike conventional systems that rely solely on smoke detection, our system employs a multi-spectrum detection approach. It analyzes infrared signals, smoke, and various other compounds to accurately detect the presence of fire. Furthermore, this comprehensive approach enhances safety and response time, ensuring a more effective fire management solution.
