In an exclusive conversation with The Interview World at the PRAGATI Founders Forum 2025—hosted by iHub-AWaDH at IIT RoparArjun Mittal, Founder and CEO, along with Ishank Bansal, Founder and COO, delve into their transformative work in the renewable energy space. They reveal how IIT Ropar is enabling them to democratize solar energy, outline the distinctive advantages of their technology, and present a compelling case for the business model’s viability and long-term sustainability. They also detail the diverse locations where their solutions are being implemented and share insights into the company’s revenue-generation strategy.

Here are the most compelling insights from that impactful exchange.

Q: Can you walk us through Envinova Smartech’s flagship solutions in the renewable energy sector and how they contribute to advancing sustainable energy goals?

A: At Envinova Smartech, we specialize in solar-powered outdoor infrastructure, partnering with municipal corporations, various government departments, and private enterprises. Our core offering includes the installation of smart solar stations designed to deliver essential public conveniences—such as mobile charging, CCTV surveillance, Wi-Fi connectivity, and more—all powered by clean, renewable energy.

In the public sector, we collaborate with authorities to enhance civic infrastructure through sustainable, tech-enabled solutions. Simultaneously, we offer a tailored range of solar-powered products for the private sector, addressing diverse operational needs. Our primary focus remains clear: advancing the solar outdoor infrastructure landscape with scalable, impactful innovations.

Over the past year, we’ve executed several landmark projects. Notably, in Ayodhya, we deployed 18 solar charging stations across key public locations—from the iconic Ram Mandir to various ghats—ensuring seamless access to power and connectivity for pilgrims and visitors. Beyond Ayodhya, we’ve also collaborated with esteemed institutions like the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and other prominent organizations.

To date, we have successfully installed over 30 solar-powered stations across India, each reinforcing our commitment to sustainable public infrastructure.

Q: As part of your mission to democratize solar power, how is IIT Ropar supporting your efforts—technologically, strategically, or through partnerships?

A: When we first launched fresh out of college, IIT Ropar became our crucial launchpad. They awarded us an initial grant of ₹5 lakh, enabling us to kickstart our venture. As we prepared to scale, IIT Ropar further supported us by facilitating additional funding.

Beyond financial aid, IIT Ropar has remained a steadfast partner for over two and a half years. They have consistently connected us with industry leaders and corporate stakeholders. Whenever we needed assistance—whether navigating government channels or engaging private sector collaborators—they stepped in without hesitation.

We deeply appreciate IIT Ropar’s unwavering support. Their guidance and resources have been instrumental in shaping our journey and fuelling our growth.

Q: With numerous players in the solar energy space, what differentiates Envinova Smartech from its competitors?

A: Currently, the solar energy landscape in India—and globally—remains fragmented. It mainly focuses on residential rooftop systems or large commercial installations. We introduced a fresh perspective: why not integrate solar power into everyday public life? This approach not only promotes green energy but also fulfills a vital social purpose by delivering modern conveniences to the community.

India, as the world’s fourth-largest economy, urgently requires modern and sustainable infrastructure to match its rapid growth. Smart cities and emerging tier-2 and tier-3 urban centers aspire to become global tier-1 cities. To realize this vision, infrastructure must be both cutting-edge and environmentally responsible, especially amid accelerating climate change.

Our goal was clear: harness solar energy to transform outdoor public infrastructure. We sought to generate free, clean electricity while offering essential public services—completely free of cost. By identifying this untapped market segment, we engineered innovative products tailored specifically to meet these needs.

In doing so, we are not just building solar solutions; we are redefining the role of renewable energy in shaping the future of India’s urban and rural landscapes.

Q: What is your core strategy for ensuring long-term viability and sustainable growth for your business in the renewable energy sector?

A: We have been active in the market for a year and a half, during which we have witnessed an overwhelmingly positive response. Currently, we collaborate with around ten major municipalities across North India, and our expansion is now accelerating pan India. Notably, we are attracting significant interest from the private sector, including corporates and multinational companies eager to implement this infrastructure within their campuses and offices.

Clearly, we have achieved the right product-market fit for India. Moreover, this success has sparked global interest, underscoring the broad appeal and potential of our offering. In short, our solution is resonating strongly both domestically and internationally.

Q: Where are you currently targeting for the installation of your solar solutions?

A: We focus on outdoor public spaces across various sectors. For example, last year the Indian Army approached us with a challenge: they conduct surveillance in remote regions where grid connectivity is scarce or unreliable. To address this, we devised a solution centred on convenience—harnessing solar energy to power small, critical devices in these isolated locations.

Our primary market revolves around such convenience-driven applications. Take tourist sites, for instance. Cities attract millions of visitors annually, all of whom need basic amenities like mobile charging stations. Municipal corporations and local authorities must provide these services, and by integrating renewable solar energy, our product aligns perfectly with smart city objectives. It enhances public convenience while operating entirely off-grid.

Importantly, our solution eliminates the need for any grid connection, offering a fully sustainable and independent power source.

Q: What is your revenue generation model, and how do you plan to monetize your solar energy solutions effectively?

A: We operate through two primary models. First, we sell directly to government entities. Municipal corporations and various government organizations purchase our products and install them across their cities and localities.

Second, we engage through the CSR channel. Last year, for instance, we collaborated with Alliance and several major companies that run extensive CSR initiatives nationwide. This partnership model allows us to expand our reach through corporate social responsibility projects.

Additionally, we have developed an AI-powered crowd monitoring system. This innovation supports our advertising-driven model, where we explore public-private partnerships with government bodies and municipal corporations. By leveraging foot traffic near our solar kiosks, we generate revenue through targeted advertisements.

In essence, our solar installations not only serve public convenience but also create sustainable income streams through strategic advertising collaborations.
