The Interview World

Established in 1967, Kay Tent Industries embarked on its journey by crafting and delivering tents to esteemed clients such as the Indian Army, UN, and Para Military Forces. Over the years, Kay Tent has honed its expertise through decades of service to defense forces and government disaster relief agencies. Today, it stands tall as a premier manufacturer and supplier of tactical gear, including high-altitude rucksacks, tents, web equipment, sleeping bags, and reusable sanitary pads.

In recent times, Kay Tent has expanded its horizons by venturing into original equipment manufacturing (OEM) of backpacks for renowned luggage and laptop brands. Collaborating with industry giants such as VIP, Dell, and Targus, Kay Tent continues to thrive in this realm. Moreover, the company holds esteemed certifications including RBA, ISO, and CE.

In an exclusive dialogue with The Interview World, retired Brigadier Sunil Talwar, General Manager of Defence Supplies at Kay Tent Industries, sheds light on the innovative products tailored for defense forces. He emphasizes the stringent standards these products adhere to, aligning with international benchmarks. Here, we delve into the key insights from his interview.

Q: What are the key features and specialties of your products that differentiate them from others in the market?

A: We take great pride in presenting our extensive collection of specially crafted sleeping bags, rucksacks, and tents, meticulously designed to meet the exacting standards of the Indian Army. These products have been engineered with a singular focus: to withstand the harshest of climates, capable of enduring temperatures plummeting to an astonishing minus 50 or even minus 60 degrees Celsius. Such resilience renders them indispensable for our troops stationed in the unforgiving terrains of glaciers.

One standout example from our range is the remarkable rucksack we’ve developed. It boasts a plethora of practical features, including dedicated compartments for ammunition and a water bottle, along with a detachable small bag for added convenience. Furthermore, its innovative design incorporates a specialized case for rifles, complemented by a provision to secure a sleeping bag atop it. In essence, it functions as a self-contained infantry combat kit, providing soldiers with a comprehensive solution to carry all necessary equipment, all while maintaining an impressively lightweight profile.

Consider also our 70-liter rucksack, a testament to our commitment to equipping the armed forces with the finest gear available. Having supplied countless units to the army, these rucksacks have already proven their worth in glacier environments, where their rugged construction and ergonomic design have earned them high praise from the soldiers who rely on them daily. With each deployment, we reaffirm our dedication to supporting our troops with top-of-the-line equipment tailored to their unique needs and challenges.

Q: Could you please provide details regarding your certifications for manufacturing products specifically tailored for the defense sector?

A: We proudly boast ISO certification, alongside accreditation from both the Northern India Textile Research Association (NITRA) and the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) for our products. Our commitment to quality is evident in the meticulous selection of materials, ensuring unparalleled performance. These materials not only offer complete waterproofing and snowproofing but also guarantee sufficient warmth, crucial for traversing glacier terrains. Particularly for our defense forces, we prioritize excellence, employing only the highest quality and certified products. This dedication to quality assurance underscores our mission to deliver reliable and superior solutions, meeting the most demanding requirements.

Q: What’s the shelf life of all these products?

A: Our commitment to quality is underscored by our five-year guarantee on these products, designed for rugged conditions. When soldiers incorporate them into their gear, the impact is evident. Throughout their tenure in harsh environments such as glaciers, the wear and tear renders the equipment unusable. Consequently, upon their return, the items are simply deposited. This cycle illustrates the practical application of our guarantee, ensuring durability and reliability even in the most demanding situations.

Q: What is the comprehensive demand for these products by the Army?

A: The demand for equipment, amounting to millions, stems from the deployment of troops in high-altitude border regions. These encompass the expansive northern sector and select areas in the eastern regions. Essential for every soldier, the infantry combat kit exemplifies the comprehensive needs of our Army. This underscores the vast scale of requirements dictated by the sheer size and strength of our armed forces. Therefore, meeting these demands necessitates a significant volume of products.

Q: What distinguishes your products from those manufactured by foreign companies?

A: Until now, the army has relied solely on imports for specialized equipment due to the unavailability of technology and materials in India, coupled with a scarcity of manufacturers. However, this marks a significant shift as the Army has embarked on major manufacturing endeavors within India under the Make in India program championed by our Prime Minister. Consequently, all these products are now being manufactured domestically.

Take, for instance, the tent depicted in the image. It’s currently undergoing trial evaluation on the glacier to assess its efficacy in withstanding snow, water, and temperatures as low as minus 50 to 60 degrees Celsius. No domestic manufacturer has previously ventured into producing such products. Similarly, a sleeping bag is also undergoing trial evaluation in the same harsh conditions. Previously reliant on imports, these products are now gradually being developed domestically, fostering self-reliance in these crucial segments, which were formerly sourced from countries like Switzerland.

Our products now stand on par with those of our foreign competitors who previously supplied to the Indian Army. While our focus remains on manufacturing for our defense and paramilitary forces, it’s noteworthy that paramilitary forces necessitate a different design, which we duly accommodate in our production. Additionally, we’ve acquired transfer of technology (ToT) from DRDO, empowering us with the necessary expertise to develop and commercialize these products domestically.

Q: What strategic innovations and advancements do you envision implementing within the organization over the next five years to drive growth, enhance efficiency, and maintain competitiveness?

A: Over the span of the upcoming five years, our primary objective revolves around the commercialization of this tent, a venture that has already seen progress with trials conducted by the Army. Parallel to this effort, we are directing our attention towards another significant goal: the production of sleeping bags domestically, a departure from our previous reliance on imports. In our quest for innovation, we are actively seeking out advanced textile materials capable of withstanding the harshest of temperatures and navigating rough terrains effortlessly. Lightweight properties are essential, ensuring ease of handling and transportability in diverse environments.
