In an exclusive conversation with The Interview World, Mohammed Saalim, Founder and Director of Sense Original Technologies Pvt. Ltd., sheds light on the company’s blockchain-based solutions for verifying product authenticity. He explains how these mechanisms work, highlights the industries leveraging these innovations, discusses the company’s financial growth trajectory, and shares a glimpse of future developments aimed at enhancing existing solutions. Q: Can you elaborate on the blockchain-based solution you have designed to verify the authenticity of products, and how it addresses the challenges of various industries?
A: Let me share our journey through a personal anecdote. A relative of mine was once hospitalized, and the doctor prescribed an injection costing approximately ₹25,000. Concerned about its authenticity, we grappled with doubts—was it genuine or counterfeit? That moment marked the inception of Sense Original. I resolved to tackle the counterfeit problem I faced so that others wouldn’t endure the same uncertainty.
I shared this vision with my co-founder, a PhD scholar at IIT Kanpur. He immediately resonated with the idea and proposed leveraging blockchain technology to combat counterfeiting. Together, we envisioned a solution that would ensure the authenticity of products, making genuine items accessible to consumers.
We dove into extensive research to understand how counterfeiters operate. It became evident that existing technologies—QR codes, holograms, and barcodes—were easily replicable. Determined to create a more secure solution, we explored alternatives. This led us to Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, which had primarily been used for payments through blank stickers. By reimagining NFC’s potential, we integrated it into our platform as a robust anti-counterfeit solution.
Today, NFC-enabled mobile phones are commonplace, making our technology easily adaptable for users. We successfully rolled out our solution to prominent brands such as Red Tape, Woodland, Triveni Almirah, Namaste India Desi Ghee, and Adivasi Hair Oil. These clients now use our NFC-enabled stickers to safeguard their products.
Achieving product-market fit with these partnerships was a pivotal milestone. From there, our journey took off, driven by the mission to eliminate counterfeits and restore trust in the authenticity of consumer goods.
Q: Can you explain the mechanism your solution uses to ensure product authenticity and verify its originality?
A: The problem lies in the ease of duplicating QR codes—anyone can print them, including counterfeiters. To address this, we’ve implemented a robust mechanism to ensure only legitimate businesses can work with us.
Clients must provide patent or trademark registration documents as a prerequisite. Our legal team meticulously verifies these documents to confirm authenticity. Only after successful verification do we onboard the client.
This rigorous process safeguards the integrity of our operations and ensures we exclusively serve genuine clients. It’s our way of building trust and maintaining the highest standards in combating counterfeiting.
Q: How many industries currently utilize your solutions, and what are the key sectors you cater to?
A: We currently offer our solutions to a wide range of industries, including FMCG, pharmaceuticals, liquor, cosmetics, baby care products, supplements, footwear, apparel, and furniture. These sectors represent our primary focus for forging strong collaborations with clients.
Q: Can you share insights into your current revenue and the factors driving your financial growth?
A: We launched the beta version in June 2024, and currently, we are generating a monthly revenue of ₹50,000. While this amount is modest, our vision is clear. With funding from VCs and other investors, we anticipate scaling rapidly. According to our research, reaching an annual revenue target of ₹100 crore is within our grasp. This goal will become easily achievable once we secure partnerships with larger clients.
Q: What other innovations are you planning to develop on this platform in the future, and how do you envision expanding its capabilities?
A: Looking ahead, we plan to go beyond blockchain. We aim to integrate AI, exploring how it can uncover new methods to ensure the authenticity of products. Our vision includes merging AI and blockchain, combining the strengths of both technologies to enhance product verification and security.
