In a significant escalation of US President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown, a US military plane carrying Indian migrants departed for India, Reuters reported. This marks the first time undocumented Indian migrants are being deported using military aircraft.

A US official, speaking anonymously, confirmed that a C-17 aircraft left for India, a journey expected to take over 24 hours. India is the farthest destination for these military deportation flights, which have so far transported over 5,000 migrants from El Paso, Texas, and San Diego, California, primarily to Latin American nations like Guatemala, Peru, and Honduras.

Trump initiated military deportation flights last week under his emergency declaration on immigration. He stated, “For the first time in history, we are locating and loading illegal aliens into military aircraft and flying them back.” Following a call with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Trump expressed confidence that India would cooperate in taking back undocumented Indian migrants.

With an estimated 18,000 Indian migrants identified for deportation, this move underscores Trump’s broader immigration enforcement agenda. However, reports indicate that military deportation flights are significantly costlier than commercial alternatives, raising concerns over the financial burden of this operation.
