The Interview World

US President Donald Trump has ordered the construction of a migrant detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, capable of holding up to 30,000 people. The facility, separate from the existing military prison, is intended to detain “the worst criminal illegal aliens,” Trump stated.

Trump’s “border tsar” Tom Homan later confirmed that the existing facility would be expanded and operated by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Migrants intercepted at sea by the US Coast Guard could be transported there, with “the highest” detention standards applied.

Cuba’s government swiftly condemned the plan, calling it an act of “torture and illegal detention” on “occupied” land. The announcement coincided with Trump signing the Laken Riley Act into law, requiring undocumented immigrants arrested for theft or violent crimes to be jailed pending trial. Trump has urged Congress to fund the expansion, emphasizing that Guantanamo is “a tough place to get out.”
