In an exclusive conversation with The Interview World, Aviinaash Verma, Founder and Managing Director of StarrBot, shares his vision for the future of motion-sensor-embedded lighting products. He discusses the role of automation technologies in smart lighting and explains the smart sensors powering these products. Moreover, he highlights innovative solutions tailored specifically for the Indian market. Verma also elaborates on products designed to meet the needs of elderly individuals. Furthermore, he underscores the global competitiveness of his offerings. Finally, he outlines his business vision for the next five to ten years. Here are the key takeaways from his insightful conversation.
Q: Could you share the vision driving your company and highlight what sets your lighting products apart from others in the market?
A: I founded this company with a singular vision: to help the people of India drastically reduce their electricity consumption through our intelligent motion sensor lighting products. Over the past decade, I’ve watched electricity rates rise steadily. Initially, rates increased every five years, then every three years, and now, they escalate annually. In the near future, we may see rate hikes every six months—or even monthly. This is due to a growing imbalance between electricity supply and demand. Consumption is surging, while production struggles to keep pace.
This growing concern is why our Prime Minister has emphasized energy conservation and solar energy. He understands that we can’t rely solely on traditional power sources. By generating energy through solar, we can at least stabilize electricity rates.
Our product cuts electricity consumption by 80%. If the entire country adopts this technology over the next decade, we can prevent future rate hikes. Our lighting solutions are ideal for housing societies, common areas, builders, factories, schools, colleges, hospitals, warehouses, and industrial plants. For any space where electricity is billed at commercial rates, our product offers a cost-effective, sustainable solution.
Q: What automation technologies have you implemented in your smart lighting products?
A: Our products feature an integrated motion sensor embedded within the light itself, remaining completely invisible. We offer two distinct variants: one with motion-based auto-dimming and the other with motion-based auto on/off. The auto-dimming feature is ideal for outdoor lighting and common areas. It dims the light, ensuring minimal illumination that allows you to navigate spaces easily. This provides clear visibility from one end to the other, with enough light for your camera to capture accurate color output. It’s perfect for areas like pathways and parking lots, where constant, full lighting is unnecessary.
On the other hand, our motion-based auto on/off lighting is designed for indoor use. This is ideal for spaces such as bathrooms, puja rooms, kitchens, balconies, terraces, and passageways between bedrooms—areas where you don’t need light unless you enter. With this range, we offer a comprehensive solution for various lighting needs, ensuring both efficiency and convenience.
Q: What types of sensors do you incorporate into your smart lighting solutions?
A: We design and manufacture our lighting products using two advanced sensor technologies: PIR (Passive Infrared) and microwave sensors. For outdoor lighting and common areas, we exclusively use microwave sensors. They provide optimal coverage and efficiency in larger spaces. The microwave sensor technology ensures precise motion detection, offering seamless lighting control in environments that require constant adaptation to movement. For indoor use, we provide a flexible approach, offering either microwave sensors or PIR sensors, depending on the specific requirements of the space. This dual-technology approach allows us to deliver tailored, energy-efficient lighting solutions for both residential and commercial environments.
Q: Have you recently developed any innovative products specifically tailored for the Indian market?
A: Motion sensor lighting has been widely adopted in Western countries and China for over 15 years, providing energy-efficient solutions in various settings. Traditional motion sensor systems, however, have a notable drawback: they turn off automatically when no motion is detected, which can be inconvenient, especially if you’re still present but not moving. The system also shuts off after a preset duration.
In response to this limitation, we have developed an innovative lighting product that goes beyond simple motion detection. Our intelligent motion sensor lighting not only detects movement but also senses your heartbeat, ensuring that the light remains on even when you’re stationary. This advancement makes our product suitable for a wide range of environments, including office cabins, workstations, doctors’ chambers, bathrooms, living rooms, and even pooja rooms. With this breakthrough, we are shaping the future of lighting, offering a more responsive, reliable, and convenient solution for everyday spaces.
Q: Given the importance of lighting for elderly individuals and senior living spaces, do you offer any products specifically designed to cater to the needs of this segment and its infrastructure?
A: Recently, you may have heard about an incident where a senior individual fell while attempting to turn on a light by going to the switchboard. To address such risks, we are manufacturing motion sensor-embedded lights. These lights are designed to activate automatically when a person moves, even in the dark. For example, when someone gets up at night, a motion sensor footlight will immediately illuminate, guiding their way. This proactive lighting solution ensures visibility, reducing the risk of accidents. By using this type of product, elderly individuals can avoid such hazards in the future, enhancing both their safety and comfort.
Q: How do your products stand out in terms of global competitiveness?
A: We have obtained all the required certifications for India, ensuring full compliance with local standards. Additionally, we hold CE certification, which qualifies our products for sale and use in European countries, meeting their strict safety and quality requirements. However, at present, we do not have certifications for the U.S. market.
Q: Can you provide an overview of your business scale and share your vision for its growth over the next 5 to 10 years?
A: The market potential for our product in India is immense. According to a CAGR report, the motion sensor lighting market is expected to grow to ₹25,000 crore by 2030, reflecting significant demand in the coming years. We are on track to achieve a turnover of ₹5 crore this year, despite officially launching our product just last year. This impressive growth underscores the market’s readiness for such innovation. To capitalize on this momentum, we are focusing on expansion. Our plans include appointing distributors and dealers across India, enabling us to strengthen our presence and meet the growing demand for motion sensor lighting nationwide.
