In an exclusive conversation with The Interview World, Manoj Samuel, Co-founder and Director of Rain Catchers, delves into the groundbreaking innovations his company has introduced in rainwater harvesting. He highlights the advanced filtration technology that sets his products apart, explores the vast market potential for large-scale rainwater harvesting systems, and shares his ambitious vision for the company’s future. Here are the key takeaways from his insightful discussion.
Q: What are the key innovations that set Rain Catchers apart in the rainwater harvesting industry?
A: Rain Catchers specializes in delivering advanced rainwater harvesting solutions for large buildings spanning over 10,000 square feet. Unlike conventional filters designed primarily for domestic use, our technology targets SMEs, large corporations, hospitals, colleges, and other institutions where water consumption is significantly higher. To counterbalance the negative environmental impact of excessive water usage, we have developed an innovative, gravity-powered solution that operates without external energy.
Our system efficiently filters rainwater as it flows in, automatically removing dirt and debris through a dedicated drain while directing clean water into a storage facility. Traditional filtration methods relied on storage tanks, pumps, and sand filters—components that were expensive, bulky, and energy-dependent. Our solution eliminates these inefficiencies, replacing the outdated, labour-intensive process with a streamlined, cost-effective, and energy-free alternative.
Q: What unique features or advantages make your product stand out from competitors in the market?
A: Our product stands in a league of its own, with no direct competitor offering a similar solution in the market today. Developed with patented, state-of-the-art technology, it represents a groundbreaking advancement in sustainable water management. As the pioneers of this innovation, we are driving the industry forward, providing highly efficient and scalable rainwater harvesting solutions tailored for large buildings. Unlike conventional systems, our technology maximizes water conservation while ensuring seamless integration into modern infrastructure. By spearheading this transformative approach, we are not just meeting current sustainability needs—we are shaping the future of responsible water usage on a larger scale.
Q: Does the filter mechanism in your rainwater harvesting system purify rainwater to make it safe for drinking?
A: Rainwater typically has a TDS of less than 50. However, it may carry chemical or biological contaminants. This filter does not remove such impurities; post-filtration is necessary for that. The filtered water remains raw and unsuitable for drinking, making it ideal for secondary applications. To make it potable, additional filtration is required. This system effectively cleans water by removing suspended particles up to 200 microns. Additionally, it enhances aeration, increasing the oxygen content. These two key processes—filtration and aeration—ensure cleaner water while improving its overall quality for various non-potable uses.
Q: What is the filtration capacity of your rainwater harvesting system?
A: The basic model efficiently manages rainwater from rooftops up to 7,500 square feet. In contrast, the largest variant handles up to 6,000 square meters—covering more than an acre. This scalability ensures tailored solutions for diverse infrastructure needs, from small buildings to expansive commercial spaces.
Q: What are the key market opportunities for large-scale rainwater harvesting systems in India and internationally?
A: India is rapidly advancing toward industrialization, driving a significant rise in water consumption. Fortunately, the country receives ample rainfall, creating a valuable opportunity to reduce dependence on external water sources. Water is a universal necessity—no industry or sector can function without it. While some processes are more water-intensive than others, companies that rely on water in their operations will find this solution indispensable.
Rainwater harvesting remains an underutilized industry. Raising awareness and emphasizing its importance can unlock a much larger market. Our filters are already in use across India and internationally, proving their effectiveness on a global scale.
Q: How do you envision your company’s growth in the next 5 to 10 years in terms of innovation and market expansion?
A: Our company is dedicated to innovation, constantly pushing the boundaries of rainwater harvesting technology. Over the next decade, we envision refining and enhancing the robust, efficient system we have developed today. While advancements in efficiency and materials will continue, our current solution represents years of rigorous research, innovation, and perseverance.
Extensive R&D has shaped this product, ensuring reliability and effectiveness. Moving forward, we aim to introduce even simpler, more affordable solutions—making rainwater harvesting accessible to a wider audience. By driving innovation, we are not just improving water management but also empowering communities to embrace sustainability effortlessly.
