He also explores the growing opportunities in the art domain and shares valuable insights into the valuation of his work. Below are the key takeaways from this enriching conversation.
Q: Could you describe the type of artwork you create and the themes or mediums you explore in your work?
A: I create ink and acrylic paintings, each carefully crafted to evoke a unique response. For instance, this piece features delicate ink strokes, applied using a Rotring pen on canvas. Similarly, I’ve created print works on handmade paper, where I employ the same technique with the Rotring pen. My portfolio also includes acrylic landscape paintings, some of which combine oil and acrylic mediums.
Additionally, I have produced a series of sketches, in folio size, depicting the back of a roti. At the core of my work are acrylic and oil mediums, which I use on landscape and portrait-sized canvases. I also work with mythological figures, painted in ink on canvas and handmade paper, adding further depth to my diverse artistic expression.
Q: I understand your friends are also exhibiting their work here. Could you share what kind of artwork they are showcasing?
A: They have created a series featuring owls, as well as male and female figurative faces. Additionally, they have crafted miniature pottery pieces. Another notable creation is Shubham’s work, which showcases a variety of small pottery pieces, each with distinct shapes and variations.
Q: Are these products primarily intended for decorative purposes?
A: These pieces are primarily designed for interior decoration. For instance, they can be placed on tables or in corner spaces. There are also hanging products, crafted in the same style but with slight modifications for different purposes. Two color variations are used: one in black and the other in a rich brown shade.
Q: Are you currently affiliated with any organization?
A: We are freelancers, each working independently. Although we operate individually, we have come together as a group to showcase our products here in Mumbai. For instance, Shiva and Akshay specialize in Terracotta products, while my focus is on landscapes and ink work.
Q: What opportunities or trends do you see emerging in the art domain in recent times?
A: I believe AI has brought both positive and negative impacts to the art world. On one hand, it offers a vast resource for gaining knowledge and can help create remarkable masterpieces. On the other hand, AI has made it easier for anyone to produce artwork, which diminishes the unique value of handcrafted pieces. As a result, the demand for traditional handwork isn’t growing as it once did.
From my perspective, only a few artists can still create truly exceptional work by hand, as the process requires time and dedication—something that doesn’t always align with today’s fast-paced lifestyle. Many people now want quick, efficient results, which has led to a shift in artistic production. However, I believe that in the future, artists will still have a bright future, as the demand for high-quality, handmade art may rise again, even as production methods evolve.
Q: Do you feel that your artwork is being valued at the right price in the market?
A: Yes, people are willing to pay for it. Buyers have a clear understanding of the quality of the paintings and do not hesitate to invest in superior artwork.
