New Delhi: US Vice President JD Vance, on a four-day visit to India, met Prime Minister Narendra Modi today in a closed-door meeting, followed by high-level delegation talks. The visit comes at a critical juncture, as the global economy grapples with the US-China trade war and New Delhi and Washington move closer to sealing a bilateral trade agreement.
Both leaders welcomed the progress made in negotiations, with the “reciprocal” US tariffs on Indian goods currently on a 90-day pause—seen as a window to finalize the deal. PM Modi emphasized that any agreement must reflect India’s interests and not be rushed.
Talks also spanned defence, strategic technologies, and energy cooperation. India is eyeing increased US investment in tech and manufacturing, with Tesla and Starlink possibly entering the Indian market. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is expected to take these talks further during her upcoming visit to Washington.
