In an exclusive interview with The Interview World at IETF 2025, Madhan Kumar P, SBU Head – WMS & Custom Software, SIERRA ODC Pvt. Ltd., delves into SIERRA’s groundbreaking innovations in warehouse automation. He explores how software integration with robotics revolutionizes warehouse operations, highlights the company’s key clients, underscores the significant cost savings automation achieves, and unveils upcoming innovations that will further enhance SIERRA’s existing solutions.

Here are the key takeaways from his insightful discussion.

Q: What innovations is SIERRA bringing to warehouse automation, and how does it stand out from other solutions in the market?

A: Our solution, WM Central, a powerful enterprise-grade warehouse management system designed for seamless ASRS (Automated Storage and Retrieval System) integration, transforms traditional warehouses by automating storage and retrieval processes, eliminating manual inefficiencies, and significantly reducing labour costs.

Labor shortages remain a major challenge in the warehouse industry. By transitioning from manual to automated warehouses with ASRS, businesses can cut labour expenses while improving operational efficiency. Additionally, space utilization becomes a key advantage. In manual warehouses, storage is restricted by the number of levels that can be stacked.

With ASRS, warehouses can also maximize vertical storage, leveraging cranes and automated storage locations that reach heights of up to 20 meters. These multi-layered systems enable cranes to move effortlessly through aisles, optimizing space while ensuring fast and precise inventory handling.

At SIERRA, we excel in seamless ASRS integration. Our platform-agnostic and integration-agnostic approach ensures compatibility with any SDK, API, or integration platform. Regardless of the system, we deliver flawless end-to-end ASRS integration, enhancing warehouse automation and efficiency.

Q: Are you integrating this software with robotics for warehouse automation, enabling a fully labour-free system, and how does that function?

A: Robotics is fundamentally a component of hardware, often manifesting as robot integration, where machines operate through pre-programmed automation. This concept extends beyond traditional robots to include systems like automatic cranes, which function under a different label but embody the same automation principles. The distinction lies in terminology rather than function. With the right integration, robotic cranes can seamlessly become part of automated workflows, enhancing efficiency, precision, and operational reliability across industries.

Q: Who are your customers in India, or is your software primarily exported to other geographies worldwide for warehouse automation?

A: One of the most significant projects I led in warehouse automation was for Hero MotoCorp. We implemented an advanced automatic storage and retrieval system at their Neemrana warehouse, known as the Global Parts Centre, spread across a sprawling 45-acre campus.

Since 2013, an eight-member team has been stationed in Neemrana, ensuring seamless operations. For nearly a decade, we have run their systems flawlessly, without disruptions. This remains our largest implementation, and Hero MotoCorp is highly satisfied with the results.

Q: What cost savings can businesses achieve through your automation software, and how does it optimize operational efficiency?

A: Cost savings with our software depend on seamless integration with hardware. Without the right hardware, achieving savings is impossible. In an automatic storage and retrieval system, simply transitioning to an operational mode can reduce costs by 40% to 75%. In essence, the return on investment typically materializes within two to three years with an optimized implementation.

The core challenge lies in hardware alone being insufficient. Without intelligent, algorithm-driven software, even the best hardware underperforms. For Hero MotoCorp, we implemented this solution in collaboration with MURATEC. Furthermore, the key to unlocking these savings is our expertise in optimal algorithmic integration—our true specialization.

Q: What new innovations do you plan to develop on this platform over the next 5 to 10 years?

A: We have already integrated AI into our operations and are actively implementing AI-driven use cases across every aspect of warehouse management. From optimizing inventory to intelligent slotting, we are also leveraging AI to enhance efficiency and precision. Our expertise in these implementations is well established, and we are now preparing to bring AI-driven solutions to Hero MotoCorp, further advancing their operational capabilities.
