Arup Sarkar, a first-generation entrepreneur from Kolkata & MD, Sanjhrup, pushes his boundary of imagination to venture into ethnic wear industry. With calibrated success, he has built an empire of good will among the customers in India and abroad. He shares his entrepreneurial journey to T.I.W.
#1. What did motivate you to start your own business?
When you are close to the nitty gritty of banking and financial business, you understand the nuances of spinning of wealth creation faster than anyone else. As professional banker couple, we had the knack at analysing complexities of finance world and how enterprises are zooming from zero to hundred and how some are nosediving sharp. Our proximity to advocacy of wealth creation helped us to reinvent ourselves as entrepreneur.
#2. How old is your business and what response are you getting from the market?
Taking off in April 2018 as a registered MSME unit, we have passed through many uncertain times, but our resilience has helped us to sustain and taste the waters of success. Today, we mostly have repeated customers and growing at a steady pace.
#3. What kind of innovation & creativity is taking place in the ethnic wear industry?
Ethnic wear industry is in the quadrant of old product and old market. Creativity and innovation are as high as in the IT industry. So, the idea is to stick to our inherent strength of pure fabric quality and simple styling that women in India can wear anywhere, anytime. Moreover, in ethnic wear you need to continuously reinvent yourself to match the wide spectrum of sartorial elegance.
#4. What are the USPs of your products?
Quality is the biggest differentiator of our products. The versatility of our fabrics never loses the strength of purity and authenticity. Whether we create designer sarees on the base material of muslin, silk, khadi, or cotton, we never deviate from the principle of quality. Moreover, we are open to innovation in contemporary styles that suit all classes of working women. Furthermore, our stunning, vibrant, royal wedding collections and doorstep delivery pan-India differentiate us from our competitors.
#5. What are your target customer groups and what’s your positioning in global market?
We try to incorporate styling that would cater to the working women across all professions and the wedding collection ensembles. The designer blouses complete the fashion statement and try to reach out to the first-time saree drapers. Customers love to flaunt our ethnic collections with a style statement.
#6. What’s your expansion plan and how digital marketing would help you reach there?
Our first store came up in 2019 in Kolkata and we plan to have a brand space with some exclusive lifestyle retail chain with pan-India presence. The power of e-Commerce has changed the equilibrium in Indian market, and we intend to participate wholesomely. Social media platforms have a tremendous role in expanding the visibility of brand across global audiences.
#7. What’s your advice for the budding entrepreneurs in this space?
The time between ideation and implementation matters the most for a budding entrepreneur. Don’t just dream, act faster. Then only you can be a successful entrepreneur. We promote entrepreneurship amongst women who are interested in starting their own saree retailing ventures even from homes.
