In the sacred coastal town of Puri where spirituality and art breathe as one, Swagatika Pattnaik emerges as a silent sentinel of Odisha’s revered Pattachitra tradition. With every meticulous brushstroke, she summons divine narratives to life. Her canvases resonate with the presence of Lord Jagannath, Krishna, and the timeless epics of the Ramayana. Each painting unfolds as a tapestry of heritage—rendered in natural pigments, steeped in ritual, and executed with the precision inherited from generations of master artisans.

Swagatika hails from a lineage where storytelling transcends the spoken word. In her hands, the art form becomes a meditative act—devotional, deliberate, and deeply sacred.

Amidst the cultural richness of Puri, her art quietly complements the transient brilliance of her husband, Padma Shri Sudarsan Pattnaik, the world-renowned sand sculptor whose fleeting creations capture global awe. While Sudarsan’s sculptures rise with the tide and vanish with the wind, Swagatika’s works endure—etched onto fabric with hypnotic hues and primeval memory. Together, they manifest a rare creative duality: one ephemeral and contemporary, the other eternal and steeped in tradition.

Her Pattachitra is far more than ornamental. It is a spiritual manuscript—a visual hymn to Odisha’s soul. In an era tilting towards the digital and disposable, her work restores stillness, symbolism, and sanctity. Swagatika paints not just images, but remembrance. Through her, the gods continue to dance, sing, and narrate their ageless tales.

In an exclusive interaction with The Interview World at The Haat of Art, Swagatika Pattnaik, Managing Director of Sudarsansand Artistic Craft & Designs Pvt. Ltd., opens a window into her creative universe. She delves into the types of Pattachitra she creates and the inspiration that fuels her journey. She reflects on the market’s reception to her work, discusses pricing insights, articulates her long-term artistic vision, and offers heartfelt advice to aspiring artists.

Here are the key takeaways from her evocative conversation.

Q: Could you please elaborate on the type of Pattachitra artwork showcased here, what inspired you to pursue this traditional art form, and how long you’ve been practicing it professionally?

A: Here, we present Pattachitra—a revered, scroll-based painting tradition rooted in the cultural soul of Odisha. This intricate art form, typically rendered on cloth, embodies centuries of devotional storytelling and masterful craftsmanship.

At this exhibition, we showcase two distinct expressions of Pattachitra: one painted on cloth, the other on patti—a specially treated palm leaf. The patti works feature natural pigments, painstakingly prepared using gum extracted from the wood apple tree. These organic hues, steeped in tradition, lend the artwork its enduring vibrance and authenticity.

As someone born into an artistic lineage, I feel deeply connected to Odisha’s cultural legacy. That passion led me to immerse myself in Pattachitra over the past five years. What began as personal inspiration soon evolved into a collaborative journey.

Together with a dedicated group of fellow artists, we conceptualize each creation with intention. We begin by discussing the theme in depth—exploring its spiritual, cultural, and visual nuances. Then, we move to the design phase, followed by sketching, and finally, hand-painting the motifs onto sarees or pattis.

Every piece reflects not just our skill, but also our shared reverence for this time-honored art form. Through dialogue, discipline, and devotion, we bring each story to life—one stroke at a time.

Q: What kind of response have you received from audiences and the market in India and abroad for this style of Pattachitra artwork?

A: Yes, people deeply appreciate our art—drawn to its distinctiveness, its intricacy, and the precision we bring to every creation. Each piece is crafted with painstaking detail and executed with an unwavering commitment to excellence. Our threadwork speaks for itself—a silent testimony to the hours of devotion embedded in every stitch.

Audiences admire the beauty of these artworks, yet some express hesitation. They often wonder about the longevity and durability of such delicate pieces. And understandably so—given the intricate craftsmanship involved, the price tends to be higher. Many ask, why invest in something so expensive?

But those who truly understand art recognize its value. They see beyond cost—they see heritage, technique, and soul. The response, overall, has been overwhelmingly positive. People celebrate the uniqueness, the cultural richness, and the timeless narrative that each Pattachitra carries.

This is not just art; it is Odisha’s legacy on canvas. Pattachitra holds global acclaim, symbolizing the artistic brilliance of our state. In fact, our Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji recently presented Pattachitra artworks as state gifts to foreign dignitaries—further affirming its stature on the world stage.

Q: Could you share the price range you offer to buyers for your Pattachitra pieces?

A: The price of each piece varies based on the size of the patti and the level of intricacy in the artwork. The more detailed and labor-intensive the creation, the higher its value. Conversely, simpler designs with minimal detailing are more modestly priced.

Ultimately, the cost reflects the time, skill, and artistic dedication poured into the piece. Every brushstroke demands precision; every motif tells a story shaped by hours of focused effort.

At this exhibition, some of our finest paintings are available, with select pieces priced up to INR 55,000—a testament to their craftsmanship, scale, and cultural depth.

Q: With your unique combination of artistry and entrepreneurship, where do you see yourself and your creative venture in the next ten years

A: I believe the future holds immense promise for our work. We didn’t embark on this journey with a commercial motive alone. Instead, we built this company to empower and uplift women artists—to give them a platform where their talent can shine.

Our mission is rooted in promotion, not just production. We are committed to showcasing the skill, creativity, and spirit of our women artisans. What sets our work apart is its distinct departure from conventional tradition. While deeply inspired by the legacy of Pattachitra, we strive to reinterpret it—bringing a fresh, contemporary perspective to an ancient art form.

This blend of tradition and innovation is what we hope will resonate with a wider audience. We trust that people will recognize the uniqueness and authenticity of our creations. With time and effort, we aim to take our Pattachitra beyond borders—opening new avenues in the global market and ensuring our artists receive the recognition they deserve.

Q: What message or advice would you like to share with aspiring artists who wish to pursue and excel in Pattachitra art?

A: Pattachitra holds a vibrant and promising future. That’s why the younger generation—and every aspiring artist with a passion for traditional art—must actively engage with it. This is not just about preserving a legacy; it’s about pushing its boundaries.

Young artists should immerse themselves in the discipline, focusing deeply on design, creativity, and the visual storytelling that defines this sacred craft. But technical skill alone isn’t enough. To truly stand out, they must bring a sense of freshness and originality to their work.

Through dedication, innovation, and reverence for tradition, the next generation can not only sustain this art form—but also elevate it for the world to witness.
