The Interview World

Padma Shri Anju Bobby George, the celebrated Indian athlete and Olympian, honoured Athletica 2024—the inaugural inter-Jaipuria sports meet in Lucknow, organized by the Seth Anandram Jaipuria Group of Schools—with her presence as the Chief Guest. During an inspiring conversation with Team Jaipuria on the event’s sidelines, she articulated her bold vision for the future of Indian sports, especially as the nation sets its sights on hosting the 2036 Olympics. She emphasized the vast potential for nurturing sports as a viable career path in India. Additionally, she urged the young athletes to dream ambitiously, remain committed, and adopt a disciplined approach to their training. Here are the key insights from her thought-provoking interview.

Q: How does it feel to be at Athletica 2024? What’s your first impression of the event?

A: It’s truly heartwarming to see the sheer joy on the kids’ faces. In today’s demanding education system, children often lack time for anything beyond academics. However, Jaipuria Schools stand out. This isn’t my first visit here, so I know firsthand how they consistently encourage students to engage in extracurricular activities, sports, and other passions. It’s an absolutely wonderful experience to witness this.

Q: Given that there were significantly fewer women in sports in India when you first started, what challenges did you face in those early days? How do you see the current opportunities for athletes, especially with initiatives like the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS)?

A: India has transformed significantly over the years. My journey began because of my mother—she was determined, strong-willed, and unwavering in her dream to make me a champion. I always urge mothers to be that strong pillar of support for their children. Today, opportunities for young athletes in India have expanded tremendously. The country is advancing rapidly, especially in the sports arena, with an eye on the 2036 Olympics. The kids we see today are the ones who will represent our nation on the global stage. It’s crucial to nurture and encourage their talents, and that’s exactly the spirit I see here.

Q: Many parents still have reservations about allowing their children to pursue sports. As someone who has excelled in this field, what advice would you give to those parents who are hesitant to encourage their kids to take up sports?

A: Many people believe that only traditional careers like doctors or engineers can lead to success. But we must recognize and nurture other talents too. Support your child’s passion and let them soar—don’t hold them back. Remember, money can be earned in countless ways, and sports are no exception. It offers not just fame, but also financial rewards. If we’re focused on making money, rest assured, it will follow when you pursue what you love. I’m not suggesting everyone needs to become a professional athlete. Encourage your children to explore whatever interests them, be it sports or any other field. And for their well-being, incorporate at least 30 minutes of physical activity daily. You’ll be amazed at the positive impact it can make.

Q: What one piece of advice would you give to young aspiring athletes from Jaipuria Group who dream of following in your footsteps?

A: I’m absolutely thrilled to hear that. There are countless opportunities in sports waiting for you, and the world is wide open. Embrace them and enjoy the journey.
