In a surprising move, the United States on Monday sided with Russia on a UN General Assembly resolution calling for de-escalation and a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine war. The shift comes amid escalating tensions between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The resolution, backed by Ukraine and its European allies, was adopted with 93 votes in favour, 65 abstentions, and 18 against. India abstained, maintaining its stance of diplomatic resolution. The US also aligned with Russia at a Security Council vote, marking a stark departure from its previous pro-Kyiv position.

Trump, who returned to the White House last month, has openly criticized Zelensky, calling him a “dictator” and urging him to end the war swiftly. Reports suggest Washington has provided over $60 billion in military aid to Kyiv since 2022. Meanwhile, civilian casualties in Ukraine have reached 12,500, according to UN estimates.
