The Interview World

U.S. President Donald Trump has reignited interest in Greenland, claiming it could serve U.S. “economic security” goals. The autonomous Danish territory, rich in untapped mineral resources like gold, copper, nickel, and rare earth elements, is also increasingly eyed by Western nations seeking alternatives to China’s dominance in critical raw materials.

Amaroq Minerals, a mining firm operating in southern Greenland, exemplifies this push. With exploration licenses covering over 10,000 square kilometers, the company is ramping up gold production while scouting for other valuable deposits. Greenland, hosting the world’s eighth-largest rare earth reserves, holds vast potential but faces hurdles such as harsh Arctic conditions, limited infrastructure, and strict environmental regulations.

While mining revenues could reduce Greenland’s reliance on Denmark’s $600M annual subsidy, local scepticism persists about job creation and income distribution. Greenland’s government remains optimistic, welcoming partnerships with the U.S. and EU to drive much-needed investment.
