In a joint interview with billionaire Elon Musk, former US President Donald Trump reaffirmed his stance on reciprocal tariffs, warning that India will not be exempt from Washington’s new trade policies. Speaking to Fox News’ Sean Hannity, Trump recounted a recent conversation with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating, “Whatever you charge, I’m charging.”
India imposes some of the world’s highest tariffs on American imports, particularly in the auto sector, where duties can reach 100%. Musk, sitting alongside Trump, confirmed this, prompting Trump to call the disparity “unfair” to US businesses.
Under his proposed system, the US would mirror India’s tariffs on American goods, ensuring parity in trade. This move comes as both nations aim to double bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030, despite past disputes. Trump’s renewed tariff rhetoric signals a tougher stance ahead of ongoing trade negotiations.
