He discusses the significance of the rice varieties that have secured Geographical Indication (GI) tags, shares insights into rice options beneficial for diabetic patients, and traces the origins and current cultivation areas of these unique rice strains. Below are the key insights from this engaging conversation.
Q: Can you provide an overview of The Rice Studio, highlighting its core offerings and what sets it apart in the market?
A: The COVID-19 pandemic served as a catalyst for us to rethink how we could contribute meaningfully to public health. Recognizing the urgent need to boost immunity, we decided to explore the rich diversity of India’s agricultural products. We aimed to create a platform that would not only promote healthier living but also celebrate the country’s agricultural heritage.
We undertook an extensive journey across 21 states in India, seeking out unique grains, pulses, and millets that have been cherished for generations but remain largely inaccessible to the broader population. This journey revealed a wealth of natural, organic products that could play a significant role in enhancing people’s diets. From this exploration, the concept of The Rice Studio was born—a dedicated space to bring these healthful, organic staples to a single platform.
Our first rice studio in Varanasi became a reality, launched with the support of the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath. The initiative has since garnered substantial support from both government agencies and the public, who appreciate the novelty and authenticity of our offerings.
We are deeply committed to organic and natural products, refusing to compromise on quality. Our selection includes around 70 varieties of products, featuring over 21 types of rice, 7 varieties of beans, and an assortment of pulses, all organically produced and certified with GI tags. The Rice Studio not only provides access to these high-quality grains but also supports the farmers who grow them, promoting sustainable agricultural practices across the nation.
Q: Has your rice variety been granted a Geographical Indication (GI) tag?
A: Our rice and other products proudly carry the GI (Geographical Indication) tag, signifying their unique origin and quality. For example, we source a product from Himachal Pradesh, cultivated at an altitude of 15,000 feet. This altitude ensures an exceptional Air Quality Index (AQI), which we prominently display on our packaging. We are the only company in the market that highlights AQI levels, setting us apart from competitors who overlook this critical factor.
While others neglect AQI, we emphasize it as a key differentiator. Despite being a small startup, we are committed to innovation and quality. Recently, we developed seven new rice varieties, pre-mixed and ready in just 10 minutes. These include seven distinct pulaos, two varieties of kheer, and jeera rice.
We are excited to launch these products soon in Milan, Italy, specifically targeting Indian students and families living abroad. They often miss the taste of home, and we aim to bring authentic Indian flavors to their doorstep. Our market exploration focuses on meeting this demand, ensuring our products resonate with the Indian diaspora worldwide.
Q: Can you discuss which rice varieties are most suitable for diabetic patients and why they are considered beneficial?
A: One of our premier offerings is Kala Namak rice, distinguished by its Glycemic Index (GI) of under 55. Foods with a GI below 55 are deemed sugar-free, making this rice an ideal option for individuals managing diabetes. Beyond its low GI, Kala Namak rice is a nutritional powerhouse, providing four times the protein found in standard white rice. This makes it exceptionally beneficial for those suffering from malnutrition, asthma, digestive issues, and constipation. Its enhanced protein content and overall nutritional profile contribute to improved health and well-being, making it a valuable addition to any diet.
Q: Can you share the origin of this rice and the sourcing process behind it?
A: This rice, often referred to as forbidden rice, has a rich historical significance dating back to the Buddha era. The tale begins with Buddha’s journey across India after his enlightenment. Upon returning to his birthplace, he was met with questions about how future generations would remember his teachings. In response, Buddha took a handful of rice seeds from his bowl and handed them to local farmers. He instructed them to plant the seeds, explaining that the aroma of the rice would serve as a living reminder of his enlightenment and teachings.
This act was not merely about preserving a legacy; it was a gesture of deep connection with humanity and future generations. The rice symbolizes an enduring link between past wisdom and future well-being, aligning with the Indian philosophical tradition of caring for subsequent generations.
Inspired by this legacy, I am now focused on introducing this unique rice to international markets. During recent travels, I observed a significant increase in gluten sensitivities among people. Gluten-related issues, such as constipation and other health complications, have prompted many to seek gluten-free alternatives.
Our rice, with its inherent qualities, offers a viable solution. We have developed a product that is not only organic but also caters to the growing demand for gluten-free options. By ensuring that the rice is packed and produced in an environmentally friendly manner, we aim to address health concerns while honoring a timeless tradition. This endeavor reflects our commitment to combining ancient wisdom with modern needs for a healthier future.
Q: Can you specify the region in India where this rice is cultivated?
A: Yes, this product comes from a region near the Indo-Nepal border and proudly holds a GI tag. Despite its remarkable quality, it remained relatively unknown for many years. During the British colonial period, its exceptional attributes caught the attention of the English. They valued it so highly that they cultivated it in India and exported it exclusively to the royal family, ensuring it reached only the most discerning palates.
