In the wake of the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 civilians, the Centre has directed several states to conduct security mock drills on May 7 for effective civil defence preparedness. This move—first since 1971—comes as tensions escalate with Pakistan, which has fired on Indian posts for 11 consecutive nights. The Ministry of Home Affairs has asked states to activate air raid sirens, implement blackout measures, and rehearse evacuation plans. Prime Minister Modi has met top defence officials and vowed severe retaliation, while India has suspended the Indus Waters Treaty, heightening diplomatic confrontation with Pakistan.
