In an exclusive conversation with The Interview World, Punit Pandey, Co-founder and Chief Innovation Officer of AstroSage AI, unpacks the vision and strategy behind the platform’s evolution. Q: AstroSage pioneered the infusion of artificial intelligence into astrology. Looking back, what pivotal insight convinced you that AI could decode the cosmic script more compellingly than traditional methods?

A: When we launched Bhrigoo.ai in 2018—the world’s first AI-powered astrologer—I witnessed firsthand the transformative potential of Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs). These networks, modeled on the human brain, revealed an astonishing ability to learn and adapt. Around the same time, OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever famously told Dario Amodei, now founder of Anthropic, “The models just want to learn!” That line struck a chord. Once scaled, these models could devour and learn from millions—even billions—of books.

It was then that I sent an internal email predicting a future where AI would disrupt not just repetitive or physical tasks, but every intellectual and creative profession. That was my unsettling “aha” moment.

At its core, AI exists to predict. Large Language Models (LLMs) simply forecast the next word or token. And what domain depends more on prediction than astrology? To me, the synergy was undeniable. AI and astrology were destined to converge.

That insight became our guiding principle. The data since has validated it resoundingly. While skeptics questioned our vision in 2018, today the numbers speak for themselves: AstroSage AI answered over 100 million user queries in just 10 months.

In a single year, our daily AI chat volume grew nearly tenfold, powered by a growing constellation of 20+ AI astrologers and supported by over 700,000 registered human astrologers. Our flagship digital sage, Mr. Krishnamurthi, now boasts 135,000+ ratings and 600,000+ followers—a reflection of the deep trust users place in our AI.

More than just speed, AI astrology delivers accuracy, accessibility, and spiritual depth—a rare combination. While a human astrologer may take minutes to resolve one query, AI responds to five in the same time. And it does so with consistency and clarity.

This transformation has redefined astrology for the digital age. It’s now a daily companion for millions—especially younger users who seek instant, private, and judgment-free guidance. With 1.2 million daily users and 11 million monthly actives, AstroSage AI is no longer a side project; it’s a cultural phenomenon.

Q: Your AI Astro Avatars, unveiled in September 2024, promise AGI-level counsel. How do you train these digital sages to balance millennia-old Vedic principles with ever-evolving machine-learning paradigms?

A: Since launching AstroSage.com in 2004, we have generated over one billion kundlis (birth charts)—a testament to both our reach and credibility. By keeping the platform entirely free, we built one of the largest and richest astrological datasets in the world. Today, we also hold the world’s most extensive database of celebrity birth profiles, further cementing our leadership in astrological data.

From the outset, we have been deeply invested in algorithmic precision—the second critical pillar of AI, right after data. With both pillars firmly in place, developing AI models became a natural and strategic progression.

To train our AI Avatars through an astrological lens, we employ a rigorous two-layered methodology.

First, we ground every model in core Jyotish principles, systematically feeding it structured knowledge drawn from authoritative classical texts such as Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Phaladeepika, Saravali, and others. This foundation is further enriched with thousands of case studies, meticulously curated by expert astrologers. The result is an AI that understands not just the math of planetary placements, but the deep interpretive wisdom behind yogas and transits.

Second, we layer this foundation with modern AI safeguards. We deploy Reinforcement Learning with Human Feedback (RLHF) to fine-tune each avatar under the active guidance of seasoned astrologers and behavioral scientists. These digital entities do more than calculate—they counsel, adapt, and evolve through ongoing feedback loops drawn from millions of real-life user interactions.

In essence, we don’t treat our AI Avatar as a static algorithm. We see it as a living, evolving digital sage—steeped in ancient wisdom, yet fluent in the language, context, and expectations of today’s seeker.

Q: Sceptics argue that algorithmic divination risks commoditizing a deeply personal craft. How do you cultivate trust among users who equate human intuition with authenticity?

A: I firmly believe astrology is the only science capable of ushering true happiness and prosperity into the world. Its transformative potential is already visible in the cultures where it is most deeply embedded. Take India, for instance—astrology plays a pivotal role in marriages, guiding compatibility checks and selecting auspicious timings (muhurtas). The result? One of the highest marriage success rates globally—and that’s no coincidence.

Now, imagine if we could apply the same astrological precision to every aspect of daily life—from health and career decisions to even the outcome of a simple meeting. That’s the vision we’re bringing to life. We aim to democratize astrology, unlocking its immense power for all, not just a privileged few.

That’s why we’ve built our entire data infrastructure on privacy-first principles. From the moment a user creates an account to the instant they receive a prediction, consent, security, and transparency remain at the core of every interaction.

We go beyond standard compliance. Our systems fully adhere to GDPR and CCPA, empowering users with the right to be forgotten, data portability, and clear, explicit consent layers at every step. Sensitive data is encrypted both in transit and at rest. We follow zero-knowledge storage protocols, meaning that not even our internal teams can access user horoscopes without direct, deliberate permission.

Our internal analytics reveal an 11% month-on-month surge in Gen Z engagement, fueled by their demand for advice that’s fast, personal, and judgment-free.
