In a sweeping move, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) will lay off approximately 2,000 employees on Sunday, while most remaining full-time staff will be placed on administrative leave overnight. A report suggests that only personnel handling mission-critical functions will continue working. The American Foreign Service Association (AFSA) criticized the decision, calling it “hurried and callous.” This comes after a federal judge lifted a restraining order blocking the move, allowing the Trump administration to continue its overhaul of the agency, including cuts to humanitarian aid personnel.
